Black Owned Businesses to Support in Reno and Tahoe

We’re taking a look back at Black History Month, and these Black-owned businesses are deserving of our support all year round! Check out some of our favorites below:

Lighthouse Coffee:

Roasted in-house, coffee made with love, and family owned and operated: that’s what Lighthouse Coffee is all about. The Prinz family has expanded both their retail operations and direct sales to restaurants as well, so anyone, anywhere, in the Reno-Tahoe area can enjoy hand-roasted drinks like espressos, cappuccinos and more. With a great view of the Sparks Marina and Harbor, you can’t go wrong with making a trip out to this hidden gem.

Zagol Ethiopian Restaurant:

As Reno and Tahoe’s only Ethiopian restaurant, every ingredient is imported and infused with authenticity and love at Zagol. The food is a blend of modern and traditional Ethiopian cooking techniques, mixes of exotic spices and a creative menu consisting of authentic beef, chicken, lamb and vegetarian dishes. Every dish comes with injera bread instead of utensils, as the bread can be used to wrap and scoop up the items by hand. Going in a big group is encouraged since the meals encourage sharing and trying out new options.

The owner, Shita, enjoys interacting with her customers and seeing them bond over good food. Zagol Ethiopian Restaurant is located at 3314 S. McCarran Blvd., Reno, NV 89502. You can browse the menu on their website.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada

As a member of Feeding America, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is dedicated to providing community members in need with healthy food each day. Children and seniors are at an increased risk of hunger due to a lack of adequate resources. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada works hard every day to ensure that the community has access to food, and with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, they’ve added Thanksgiving meal kit distributions to their efforts.

This year, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will be hosting drive-through meal distributions with all the fixings needed for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Though the Thanksgiving meals have already been claimed for this year, we can expect to see much more from this organization as the holiday season progresses, so be sure to keep an eye out for future charity events in Reno at the Food Bank.

Reno Art Works (RAW)

Reno Art Works, or RAW, is a non-competitive organization dedicated to keeping the flow of art constantly moving forward. Their facility provides artists of all mediums with professional work, gallery, and classroom space in order to keep local art thriving, even for those without the necessary resources.

RAW hosts several art events year-round and even host Open Studios every third Saturday of the month. This Thanksgiving, Reno Art Works is hosting a Homemade Holiday Shopping event on November 27th. For more information about this event, visit the Reno Art Works Facebook page where information will be posted regarding location and time.

Reno Recipes

Reno Recipes is a local organization committed to serving the community with quality food and service outside of the traditional restaurant setting. Not everyone has the luxury of going out to a restaurant for dinner, but you can experience the next best thing with food prepared locally by a professional chef. Reno Recipes works with families in need and various nonprofits including Eddy House, Karma Box, and Northern Nevada Hopes.
