We’re taking a look back at Black History Month, and these Black-owned businesses are deserving of our support all year round! Check out some of our favorites below:

Lighthouse Coffee:

Roasted in-house, coffee made with love, and family owned and operated: that’s what Lighthouse Coffee is all about. The Prinz family has expanded both their retail operations and direct sales to restaurants as well, so anyone, anywhere, in the Reno-Tahoe area can enjoy hand-roasted drinks like espressos, cappuccinos and more. With a great view of the Sparks Marina and Harbor, you can’t go wrong with making a trip out to this hidden gem.

Zagol Ethiopian Restaurant:  

As Reno and Tahoe’s only Ethiopian restaurant, every ingredient is imported and infused with authenticity and love at Zagol. The food is a blend of modern and traditional Ethiopian cooking techniques, mixes of exotic spices and a creative menu consisting of authentic beef, chicken, lamb and vegetarian dishes. Every dish comes with injera bread instead of utensils, as the bread can be used to wrap and scoop up the items by hand. Going in a big group is encouraged since the meals encourage sharing and trying out new options.

Tabu’s of Reno Barber Lounge

Tabu’s began in 2015 and is a full service barber lounge to provide haircuts, razor shaves, facials and complimentary beverages. The owner, Tabu McKnight, began his career as a student barber, then an assistant and instructor. He currently is involved in community outreach and cosmetology classes throughout the area.

GaiaLicious Global Gifts Boutique

Located in South Lake Tahoe, GaiaLicious should be on everyone’s list when it comes to great fair-trade, eco-friendly and locally made gifts. The shop has a friendly, spiritual feel to it and everyone who shops believes it is high-energy. The owners, Kelly and Felix Brosch, are known in the community for their incredible kindness and passion for their shop over the last 15 years.

The Z Bar

Food Bank of Northern Nevada

Northern Nevada R.A.V.E Family Foundation

RAVE was established in 1995 through grants from the U.S. Department of Health. The overall goal of the organization is to prevent child abuse and neglect for children with special needs and/or disabilities. RAVE became an independent nonprofit organization and helps provide respite care for children in foster care with disabilities and/or special care needs. By providing temporary emotional relief from the constant care and loving attention these families provide, RAVE allows a reprieve that strengthens the quality of care families deliver to their children. Eddy House

The Eddy House is a charity in Reno that works with the homeless and at-risk youth to develop the life and job skills necessary for sustainable independence. Food Bank of Northern Nevada

As a member of Feeding America, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is dedicated to providing community members in need with healthy food each day. Children and seniors are at an increased risk of hunger due to a lack of adequate resources. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada works hard every day to ensure that the community has access to food, and with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, they’ve added Thanksgiving meal kit distributions to their efforts. 

This year, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will be hosting drive-through meal distributions with all the fixings needed for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Though the Thanksgiving meals have already been claimed for this year, we can expect to see much more from this organization as the holiday season progresses, so be sure to keep an eye out for future charity events in Reno at the Food Bank. 

Reno Art Works (RAW)

Reno Art Works, or RAW, is a non-competitive organization dedicated to keeping the flow of art constantly moving forward. Their facility provides artists of all mediums with professional work, gallery, and classroom space in order to keep local art thriving, even for those without the necessary resources. 

RAW hosts several art events year-round and even host Open Studios every third Saturday of the month. This Thanksgiving, Reno Art Works is hosting a Homemade Holiday Shopping event on November 27th. Reno Recipes

Reno Recipes is a local organization committed to serving the community with quality food and service outside of the traditional restaurant setting. Reno Recipes works with families in need and various nonprofits including Eddy House, Karma Box, and Northern Nevada Hopes.

Reno Soup for the Soul was founded by Amie Duncan, a local resident who was eager to serve love and hope to those in need. Reno Soup for the Soul began providing the homeless community with hot meals - specifically warm homemade soup - but has since grown to provide baked goods, sandwiches, wraps, and bottled drinks. Amie spends every other weekend collecting food from local restaurants like Sup and Great Full Gardens, individually packaging each meal, and distributing those meals to our neighbors in need.   

Along with providing meals, Reno Soup for the Soul offers comfort to the community by collecting necessary items such as reusable water bottles, blankets, face masks, and hygiene kits.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada, a member of the Feeding America Foundation, provides food to more than 106,000 residents each month. With 1 in 4 children going hungry in Nevada, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is excited to be a pivotal organization in the hunger relief efforts that are so crucial to our community in need. The Food Bank serves people of all ages, but children and seniors make up over half of all their monthly guests.
